An Everett man was arrested Tuesday evening and charged in the murder of a South End man whose body was found beneath a Route 93 overpass last month, the Suffolk district attorney announced.
Authorities believe Christopher W. Powell, 39, stabbed Corey Thompson, 44, to death during a physical altercation last month, District Attorney Daniel F. Conley’s office said in a statement Tuesday night.
Thompson was found on Feb. 25 when a passerby noticed his body beneath the Route 93 overpass near the intersection of Albany and Traveler streets.
An autopsy revealed Thompson had been stabbed.
No further information on the murder or the arrest was released Tuesday night.
“It was a shock,” said Martha Moran, the half-sister of Thompson, about his death. “He was probably in the wrong place at the wrong time.
“I’m happy,” she said of the arrest. “I wish it had been less time in finding someone, but I understand.”
Moran said she did not know if the suspect and her brother knew each other, added that State Police were not able to reveal many details to her family as the slaying is still under investigation.
Born in Framingham, Thompson was a hair stylist at Diego’s Salon on Newbury Street, where Moran said he was very popular with customers. When he was not working, he liked to split his time in his condominium in Florida, she said.
Twenty-four years older than Thompson, Moran, 68, speaks of her brother as a “boy.”
“He was a very nice boy,” she said.
Moran was pregnant during the same time that Thompson’s mother was expecting him.
“When he was born, I used to hold him and rock him. My first born and him used to play all the time,” she said. “My children adored him; he was the coolest uncle they could have.”
Moran said people from all over Boston drove out to Marlborough to attend her brother’s wake.
“He was always a hoot,” she added. “Very loved, very giving, very kind.”
After his arrest, Powell allegedly admitted to stabbing Thompson in a statement to investigators, Conley’s office said.
Powell will be arraigned Wednesday in Boston Municipal Court.Melanie Dostis can be reached at email@example.com.
