State Police arrest two men about 700 feet from where they robbed Fitchburg store at knifepoint
This morning in Fitchburg, Trooper Donald Gray was quicker than a pair of robbery suspects.
Authorities say he captured two men while they were still wearing the masks over their faces they had allegedly donned to disguise themselves when they robbed a convenience store.
State Police said Gray made the arrests around 4:10 a.m. today while patrolling in the central Massachusetts community and he recovered a knife authorities suspect was used during the robbery of the Cumberland Farms store.
Fitchburg Police Captain Paul Bozicas said the store is located at 367 River St. Gray took the men into custody near the intersection of River and Daniels streets. According to Google maps, the suspects made it about 700 feet away from the store before Gray arrested them.
Bozicas said Fitchburg officers were responding at the time when they were notified that Gray had the men in custody.
“It was good luck he was right in that area,’’ said Bozicas. “Good policing is being in the right spot at the right time.’’
Bozicas identified the men as Mathieu Arsenault, 23, and Jose Roman, 40, both of Fitchburg. They were scheduled to be arraigned in Fitchburg District Court today. Both are charged with armed robbery while masked, among other charges, he said.
The clerk at the store was unharmed, Bozicas said.John R. Ellement can be reached at email@example.com.
