One killed, four injured in early morning Brockton car crash
A 17-year-old Brockton girl was killed and four young adults were injured early Sunday morning after the 1999 Volkswagen they were in crashed into a utility pole near 265 Westgate Drive in Brockton, authorities said.
Rosany Viera died, said Bridget Norton Middleton, assistant district attorney for the Plymouth County District Attorney’s office.
Viera turned 17 nine days before her death, according to a date of birth provided by Middleton.
Four other young adults, including the car’s driver, were taken to local hospitals for non-life threatening injuries, she said. All four are from Brockton, according to the police Sergeant Charles Cassiani.
Middleton said that the Volkswagen crashed just after midnight when the driver lost control after passing another vehicle. She said the two people in the vehicle that was passed were not injured and authorities do not consider the second car to have been “involved” in the crash.
Middleton said the crash remains under investigation and declined to comment on whether any charges will be filed or if citations will be issued.
Cassiani said a Massachusetts State Police reconstruction team was investigating the crash. He declined to say whether impairment or speed contributed to the crash. He would not say whether the car’s occupants wore seatbelts.Jaclyn Reiss can be reached at firstname.lastname@example.org.
