A man in Brockton exchanged gunfire with State Police troopers assigned to the gang unit Thursday night, a burst of violence that left bullet holes in the cruiser, but no one wounded, State Police said.

The alleged shooter was arrested after the 7:55 p.m. incident on Amherst Street in the South Shore city, State Police said.

The incident began while State and Brockton police were conducting an investigation on the street, State Police said.

One man allegedly opened fire on the troopers and then jumped into a car being driven by another man, State Police said. The vehicle with the two men inside it sped off, but was abandoned a short time later, State Police said.

The men jumped out of the vehicle and were arrested after a brief foot chase, State Police said.

They were taken into custody by Brockton police.
