A man was struck and killed by a commuter rail train in Gloucester today, an MBTA spokesman said.

It is unclear why the man, who was struck around 2:25 p.m. roughly 500 yards north of Gloucester Station, was on the tracks, spokesman Joe Pesaturo said.

The Newburyport/Rockport commuter rail line is currently experiencing 20-25 minute delays due to the police investigation, according to alerts posted on the MBTA website.
