Inmates at the Middlesex Jail in Cambridge are being temporarily relocated to other facilities due to an issue with the water system, a spokesman from the Middlesex Sheriff’s Office said today. The Division of Capital Asset Management and Maintenance was alerted and they are working to address the problem at the Edward J. Sullivan Courthouse, which houses the jail, according to Kevin Maccioli, a spokesman for the office.

“In order to maintain public safety, the Middlesex Sheriff’s Office held over and brought in additional corrections officers and logistical support,” Maccioli said in a statement.

The inmates have been cooperative throughout the transition, he added. It is unclear how long the repairs will take or when the inmates will return to the jail.
