An armed home invasion in Fitchburg Tuesday night erupted into a high-speed chase early this morning as State Police attempted to stop two cars allegedly seen fleeing the scene of the crime, State Police said.
Police stopped a white Lexus in Acton after chasing it along Route 2 eastbound, but a white Dodge van eluded authorities after leading troopers into Lawrence, State Police spokesman Dave Procopio said.
At least one person who was in the white Lexus was detained. Procopio said he did not know if the person had been arrested.
Two State Police cruisers spotted the van and Lexus driving east on Route 2 at 1:24 a.m. today and recognized them from descriptions of the wanted vehicles.
The troopers chased the cars until the van split off onto Interstate 495 North. The troopers followed the Dodge van because they had been told that the occupants of the van had the handguns used in the home invasion, Procopio said.
The Lexus continued along Route 2 before other State Police and Acton police pulled it over, Procopio said.
A search warrant was executed at the scene where the Lexus was stopped, Fitchburg Police Sergeant Glenn Fossa said. He did not say what the warrant was for.
