State Police: Victims in Swansea murder-suicide case argued over money

Police have identified the two men shot to death Sunday in an apparent murder-suicide in Swansea that allegedly escalated after an argument over money, State Police said today.

Swansea police and State Police responded to a report of shots fired on Stephen French Road around 6 p.m. Sunday and found Mitchell Stevenson, 37, of Tiverton, R.I., fatally shot in a car, State Police said.

Witnesses told police that a single gunshot was heard inside a home on Stephen French Road shortly after a man fled into a house near the car, State Police said. Police entered the home and found Christian Wilson, 43, the resident of the house, dead from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.

State Police said their investigation into the deaths indicates that Wilson owed Stevenson money, and Stevenson had driven to Wilson’s home Sunday to collect the debt when the two began arguing.

Wilson allegedly brandished a firearm and fired several shots into Stevenson’s car, killing him. Wilson then returned to his home and allegedly shot himself, State Police said.

The investigation is continuing, State Police said.
