The Cambridge police unveiled an online tool today that plots the city’s crimes on a map, listing each offense, the time it occurred, and other information, including the incident report number.

The online map will be refreshed daily. It shows all types of crimes committed in the past few weeks, except for homicide cases and sexual assaults, said police spokesman Dan Riviello.

The mapping application, accessible by computer or smartphone, didn’t cost the department anything to set up. The Citizen Observer crime tip software the department already subscribed to included the capability, Riviello said.

Users can customize the map, picking out certain types of crimes or a certain window of time, making it easier to identify crime trends throughout the city. Other features of the mapping application include an anonymous tip function.

“We are always looking for new and improved ways to share information with our community,” Riviello said. “This is just a way for us to present crime trends in a more digestible way to the public.”

“We believe an informed community is a safer community,” Police Commissioner Robert C. Haas said in a statement.
