MIDDLEBOROUGH — A woman is dead and a man who had been living in her home is now accused of shooting her to death shortly after midnight today, according to Plymouth District Attorney Timothy J. Cruz’s office.
The man, whose name was not released, was shot and wounded by police when he refused to put down a “long barrel firearm” he was holding while standing in the driveway of the victim’s home on Highland Street, according to Cruz’s office.
Police shot the man, who has since been hospitalized and is expected to recover. His name is also being withheld, and he is not expected to appear in court today given his medical condition, officials said.
In the statement, prosecutors said Middleborough police were called to the home around 12:03 a.m. today to investigate a report of a woman bleeding at that address. First responders found the woman’s husband and another person performing CPR on the woman, who had been shot in the chest, prosecutors said.
Officers then spotted the suspect in the driveway. “He was coming down the driveway armed with a long barrel firearm,’’ Cruz’s office said in the statement. “Police told the individual several times to drop the weapon. He did not comply and was pointing the weapon at police. He was then shot by police.’’
The man is currently charged with assault with intent to murder and possession of a firearm.
A motive for the violence was not disclosed.
Cruz’s office along with State Police and Middleborough police continue to investigate.
