Bail set at $500,000 for Sharon woman in Stoughton crash that killed pregnant woman
A 46-year-old Sharon woman was arraigned today in Stoughton District Court after she allegedly drove her car into a pregnant woman and killed her Sunday night in Stoughton, authorities said.
Karen Blau, 46, faces charges of motor vehicle homicide, operating under the influence of liquor and drugs, negligent operation of a motor vehicle, and a marked lanes violation, the Norfolk County district attorney’s office said in a statement.
Blau was ordered held on $500,000 cash bail. A judge also ordered her not to contact the victim’s family, the statement said. Blau is due back in court Aug. 14 for a pretrial conference, the statement said.
The victim, Joanne White, 35, of Stoughton, was hit by Blau’s car around 8:45 p.m. Sunday on Lincoln Street, Stoughton police said.
White was transported to Massachusetts General Hospital by helicopter, where she and her unborn child were pronounced dead, police said.
Blau, who was visiting a residence on Lincoln Street, backed her car out of the driveway and went completely across the street, where she hit a tree and White, the statement said.
White had been walking with her 11-year-old son. She yelled at him to run. He was able to avoid injury, the statement said.
Stoughton police, State Police, and the district attorney’s office have conducted a preliminary investigation and reconstruction of the crash. The investigation is ongoing and Blau may face additional charges, police said.Melissa can be reached at firstname.lastname@example.org or on Twitter @Melissa__Hanson
