Shark is sighted 30 yards offshore, forcing closure of Cape Cod’s Marconi Beach
A shark was sighted off the shores of Marconi Beach in Wellfleet today, resulting in the closure of the beach and restrictions at other area beaches, officials said.
A National Park Service lifeguard saw the shark at 1:05 p.m. while on duty at the beach, said Amy Mahler, a spokeswoman for the Massachusetts Executive Office of Energy and Environmental Affairs.
Matthew Bielecki, a US park ranger confirmed the sighting. He was unable to say what species the shark was, but noted that the shark was 30 yards from the shoreline heading north, Mahler said.
The beach was closed immediately, Mahler said.
Other area beaches did not close but had wading periods, Mahler said.Melissa can be reached at firstname.lastname@example.org or on Twitter @Melissa__Hanson
