Woman injured in collision with freight train in Buzzards Bay
A freight train and a car collided this morning in Buzzards Bay, sending the female driver to an area hospital with minor injuries, officials said.
The collision, which occurred at about 7:19 a.m. on a train crossing on Academy Drive, disrupted the route of a freight train that transports trash from Cape Cod to a trash energy facility in Rochester. The train, around six cars in length, was returning to the Cape at the time of the crash.
The driver, a teen from Mattapoisett, was attempting to turn her car around on Academy Drive when she hit the train. Police suspect the driver must have had the radio or air conditioning on, and did not see or hear the train.
“She drove into the train,” said Bourne Police Lieutenant Richard Tavares. “Had she arrived a little sooner or if the train was going a little slower, the events would have been different.”
The woman was cited by Bourne police for failure to stop at a red light at a railroad corssing. She remains at Tobey Hospital in Wareham injuries that are not life-threatening, said Joe Carrara, Bourne deputy fire chief.
“Once the scene was cleared, the train continued on with its business,” Carrara said. The car was also still drivable after the collision, though the front sustained significant damage, Carrara said.Jasper can be reached at email@example.com or on Twitter @Jasper_Craven
