A Lowell man died Thursday night when a tractor-trailer truck hit his minivan on Interstate 495 southbound in Tewksbury after he had slammed into a guardrail during a rainstorm, authorities said.
Daniel Filiatrault, 44, was pronounced dead at Lowell General Hospital after the tractor-trailer struck the right side of his minivan, State Police said in a statement.
The Dodge Caravan driven by Filiatrault veered into the breakdown lane and crashed into the guardrail at about 11:03 p.m. The impact caused the minivan to spin and re-enter the highway, facing the guardrail, State Police said.
At that time, a tractor-trailer owned by Penske Truck Leasing of Reading, Pa., driven by a 53-year-old Brockton man, crashed into the minivan, the statement said. The truck driver braked and the truck came to a controlled stop.
It was raining heavily at the time of the crash, the statement said.
The cause of the crash, including why Filiatrault lost control of the minivan, and whether any charges are warranted is under investigation, the statement said.
Two of the travel lanes, the breakdown lane, and an exit ramp were closed for three hours for medical response, investigation, and cleanup of the scene, authorities said.
