In what his campaign is calling a major political coup, Felix Arroyo has secured the mayoral endorsement of state Representative Byron Rushing, one of the longest-serving African American legislators in Massachusetts.

With the endorsement, announced this morning, Rushing promised he would campaign hard for Arroyo and rally supporters in districts that Rushing serves, including Lower Roxbury and the South End.

“Representative Rushing is an icon in this city,” Arroyo said after receiving a call from the lawmaker. “I am excited to have his support and grateful for it.”

Rushing said he threw his support behind Arroyo because he is the only candidate who is addressing issues Rushing has long championed, including ending poverty.

“He supports using the city as an engine for helping people who are poor,” Rushing said. “What I hope is that people who agree with the policies that I have influenced will support Felix and people who have not made up their minds will consider him. “

The endorsement is the second for Arroyo this week. The Boston Teachers Union backed Arroyo on Wednesday, along with Councilor Rob Consalvo.
