16-year-old was driving car that struck, killed bicyclist, 13, in Hopkinton
HOPKINTON – Grief settled on a stretch of Hayden Rowe Street today where a 13-year-old boy, often seen playing basketball in his driveway with friends, was struck and killed by a car being driven by a 16-year-old girl on Wednesday.
Neighbors on the residential street, which is also designated as Route 85 , today described Shayne Desroches as a “very sweet kid’’ whom they understood was an eighth-grader at the town’s middle school.
“He is going to be missed by a lot of people,’’ said one neighbor, a mother who asked not to be identified by name. “An entire community is going to be affected for a very long time.’’
Desroches was on his bicycle and was about to reach his home on Hayden Rowe around 4:45 p.m. when he was struck. The girl has not been named by officials.
Desroches was fatally injured. Middlesex District Attorney Marian T. Ryan’s office is investigating the fatal crash to determine whether criminal charges should be filed.
Neighbors said they do not know who the driver is. One neighbor, Saumya Balraj, said she has long doubted the wisdom of issuing driver licenses to 16-year-olds.
“I feel 16 is too young to drive,’’ she said. “But some things you have no control over.’’
No one answered the door today at the Desroches family home.
Neighbors said his family is closely knit and that Shayne, like many children in the western suburb that is the starting point for the Boston Marathon, often rode his bike on Hayden Rowe Street.
They also said he was often seen playing basketball with friends in the driveway of his home, and was a bright presence in their neighborhood.
While the investigation into the crash is ongoing, residents said that they have long feared something horrific would happen near their homes, given the high speeds drivers often reach as they pass through.
“I am more angry than sad,’’ said one neighbor. “People drive way too quick on this road. I just wish people would slow down.’’
According to Ryan’s office, the incident remains under investigation by State Police and Hopkinton police.Peter Schworm can be reached at firstname.lastname@example.org. Follow him on Twitter @globepete.
