Norwell man faces statutory rape charge after arriving at Andover hotel for second meeting with child

A Norwell man was arrested by Andover police on a statutory rape charge Saturday after he arrived at a hotel allegedly intent on meeting a child there for the second time, Andover police said.

The charge and an additional charge of enticement of a child stem from a meeting the man allegedly had with the child at the same hotel on Sept. 26, police said.

Police identified the man as 49-year-old Andrew Whittaker.

Andover Police Lieutenant Edward Guy said police were alerted to suspicions of abuse by someone close to the child, triggering the investigation.

During the investigation, officers monitored Whittaker’s effort to communicate with the child, allowing them to be at the hotel on Saturday when he arrived.

The child was not at the hotel, Guy said.

Whittaker on Saturday was being held on $15,000 cash bail, police said. He is scheduled to be arraigned Monday in Lawrence District Court.
