Man killed in police shootout had lengthy criminal record, gun charges
The man killed in a shootout with Boston police Saturday has been identified as Darryl Dookhran, a 20-year-old with a long criminal record that includes convictions for gun possession and several gang-related attacks.
Dookhran was killed Saturday afternoon after two plainclothes Boston Police officers stopped him and 26-year-old Dorchester resident Christopher Murrain near Geneva Avenue and Westville Street, Boston Police said Sunday.
According to police, Murrain shoved one of the officers and the pair took off running. Dookhran allegedly turned and fired on the officers with a semiautomatic handgun, hitting one in the arm. The officers returned fire, killing Dookhran.
Dookhran was sentenced in 2012 to a two and one-half year prison term for multiple gun possession and other charges related to an incident in which he brought a loaded Intratec AB-10 semiautomatic 9mm handgun to a classroom at Massachusetts Bay Community College where he was a student. At the time police told the Boston Globe that Dookhran was a suspected member of the Favre Street Mobb, operating in the Mattapan-Dorchester area.
He had also previously been in state custody as a juvenile for being involved in several fights while a Boston high school student, including one in which he stabbed a rival gang member.
A small shrine was briefly erected Sunday in an empty lot behind a market on Geneva Avenue, steps from where Dookhran was killed. The memorial consisted of several lit candles, stuffed animals, a bronze angel figurine, empty plastic nip of Bacardi rum, and the national flag of Trinidad and Tobago. By early afternoon, the items had been removed.
The wounded officer has not been identified by police. He is expected to recover, and a Boston Police spokeswoman said he was in stable condition at Boston Medical Center today.
Murrain was arrested at the scene and will be charged with assault and battery on a police officer in Dorchester district court Monday.Dan Adams can be reached at firstname.lastname@example.org. Find him on Twitter at @DanielAdams86.
