Walsh announces plans for inauguration
Mayor-elect Marty Walsh has launched plans for an inaugural program that “supports and promotes the theme of neighborhood and community service” and has established a website that will provide updates on inaugural activities.
In a statement released this morning, Walsh announced three days of activities ahead of his swearing in:
* Jan. 3 – Volunteers from Walsh’s transition committee, campaign, and inaugural committee “will kick off days of community service,” in which Walsh has invited Bostonians to participate. Volunteer opportunities include painting school buildings, serving meals to the homeless, cleaning up parks or other public locations, and other activities. Walsh will participate in at least 10 service activities over the weekend. The inaugural website includes an online form for updates on volunteer opportunities.
* Jan. 4 – Walsh will host a youth summit at Roxbury Community College. Students in grades 6-9 will be asked to “share their hopes and dreams for Boston’s future” with the incoming mayor.
* Jan. 5 – Walsh will host a brunch for seniors at Northeastern University’s Cabot Athletic Center. Following the brunch, Walsh will attend an interfaith service hosted by the Rev. Jeffrey Brown at the Old South Church.
Walsh will be sworn in on Jan. 6, at 10 a.m., at Conte Forum at his alma mater, Boston College. Roderick L. Ireland, Chief Justice of the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court will administer the oath of office. It will be a ticketed event and seats are limited, though tickets will be free. There will be free parking on-site, but participants are encouraged to use public transportation. More details about the swearing-in ceremony and tickets will be released in the coming days.
The night of his swearing in, Walsh will host an inaugural celebration at the Hynes Convention Center. Tickets will be available through Ticketmaster for $35. Attendees are encouraged to bring a nonperishable food item or make a donation to help low-income families pay for their heating costs this winter. Details on the RSVP process, ticket availability, and entertainment will be announced in the coming days.
