The Massachusetts Film Office confirmed Tuesday that the Jason Reitman movie “Labor Day,” starring Kate Winslet and Josh Brolin, will film here in June. We already knew that, of course (local casting has been in progress for a while), but the film office statement makes the project official. One of the many New Englanders who are thrilled about the film and its Shelburne Falls shoot is Joyce Maynard, who wrote the book on which ”Labor Day” is based. She was told us by phone yesterday that she’s relieved that the movie will be made in Massachusetts, not far from New Hampshire where she’s from and where her book is set. “I was really pushing hard for a New England location,” she told us, calling herself a “New Englander in California.” Maynard also revealed that she’s auditioning for a small role in “Labor Day.” It wouldn’t be her first appearance in a film based on one of her books. Maynard played Nicole Kidman’s lawyer in the adaptation of her 1992 book “To Die For.”
