Colonial Theatre soon to reopen?

The Colonial Theatre, dark since July 2011, may reopen on Oct. 24. Citi Performing Arts Center president and chief executive Josiah A. Spaulding Jr. confirmed Wednesday that he has requested an entertainment license from the city Consumer Affairs and Licensing board. Spaulding said Citi is operating the building under a three-year deal with Emerson College, which owns the venerable Colonial. The agreement, signed over the summer, took effect Sept. 1, he said. “We have been cleaning, painting, cleaning, painting, cleaning, painting, to get the theater back into shape to do shows,’’ Spaulding said. The board’s decision is expected within a couple of days, according to city officials. If it grants the license, the first show would be a benefit concert by James Taylor on behalf of US Senate candidate Elizabeth Warren. Other upcoming shows at the Colonial are slated to include “Memphis’’ in December, “Jersey Boys’’ in early 2013, and the world premiere of “Tuck Everlasting,” the musical, in June 2013, all previously announced for the venue by Broadway in Boston.
