The ART’s ‘Pippin’ heads to Broadway

Diane Paulus’s circus-themed “Pippin” revival, which opened Thursday night at the American Repertory Theater, will transfer to Broadway’s Music Box Theatre this spring, the show’s producers say. The long-rumored New York engagement will begin previews March 23, nearly 40 years to the day after the musical, with a score by Stephen Schwartz (“Wicked”) and a book by Roger O. Hirson, scooped up five trophies at the 1973 Tony Awards. Veteran Broadway producers Barry and Fran Weissler (“Chicago”) and relative newcomers Howard and Janet Kagan (“Hands on a Hardbody”) — a quartet discreetly given “special thanks” in the Cambridge playbill — will present the ART production on Broadway. Opening April 25, it will be the first Broadway staging of “Pippin” since Bob Fosse’s original production closed in 1977 after more than 1,900 performances.
