Robert De Niro producing neo-Nazi drama based in South Boston
If Hollywood hasn’t already besmirched Boston’s reputation by portraying it as America’s official white ghetto, it’s about to. Deadline.com reports that Oscar winner Robert De Niro (inset) and his producing partner Jane Rosenthal are developing a neo-Nazi drama called “The 4th Reich” for Showtime. Described as “American History X” meets “The Town,” the show will deal with race, religion, and politics through the prism of a South Boston-based neo-Nazi movement. We’re guessing the neighborhood’s going to love that. The central character is a former leader of the group who’s been released from jail to become an FBI informant. It’s not clear if the show would be shot in Boston, and we couldn’t reach the film office folks Wednesday. According to Deadline.com, sources close to the project insist “The 4th Reich” won’t be just a violent, exploitative show, but instead will deal with “human stories of former extremists and people affected by extremism.” We shall see.
