Mark Harvey , founder of the Aardvark Jazz Orchestra, which is celebrating its 40th anniversary, was the guest of honor at JazzBoston’s annual party for members and friends at Ryles Tuesday night. A descendant of Massachusetts congressman and abolitionist Charles Sumner , Harvey was honored for his many talents: musician, band leader, minister, and educator. (Per the City Council, Wednesday will be Mark Sumner Harvey Day in Boston.) The guest list for the party at Ryles included longtime Aardvark member Peter Bloom , and music critic Steve Elman, Elynor Walcott of Wally’s Jazz Café, jazz radio hosts Eric Jackson, Steve Schwartz, and José Massó , impresario Fred Taylor, restaurateur Darryl Settles , Grammy-winning drummer Terri Lyne Carrington , and “Boston Jazz Chronicles” author Richard Vacca , among many others.
