Mayor Tom Menino accepts Explorer Medal

Mayor Tom Menino was presented with the Norman B. Leventhal Explorer Medal at the Boston Public Library’s Leventhal Map Center Explorer Award Dinner over the weekend. The night raised $1 million for teacher training, curriculum guides, and programs at the map center. Guests at the black-tie event included BPL president Amy
Ryan, Boston Public Schools Superintendent Carol Johnson, WGBH’s Jon Abbott, JP Morgan’s Marc White, the map center’s founder, Norman Leventhal, Leventhal’s son Alan and wife Sherry, Liberty Mutual CEO David Long, Map Center Board Chairman Bob Melzer, MIT president L. Rafael Reif, and his predecessor, Susan Hockfield. The last person to win the Explorer Medal was documentarian Ken Burns.
