Red Sox won’t confirm Justin Timberlake, Jay-Z concert

The Red Sox won’t confirm or deny a rumor that Justin Timberlake and Jay-Z have Fenway Park on their tour schedule this summer. A Sox rep told us on Thursday afternoon that she’d “heard the rumors too, but there’s no announcement.” Meanwhile, down at JetBlue Park in Fort Myers, Fla., Red Sox senior adviser Dr. Charles Steinberg shrugged off rumors of Timberlake at Fenway. “They don’t tell me those things,” he told a Boston.com reporter, later adding, “Down here, concerts are the furthest thing [from] my mind.” But does he protest too much? Steinberg is the Sox official most responsible for staging extravagant acts like concerts at the stadium, and most recently orchestrated Fenway Park’s 100th anniversary celebration. Concert promoter Live Nation has also declined to say anything about where Timberlake plans to stop, and an e-mail to Timberlake’s spokesperson has yet to be returned. Timberlake and Jay-Z, who appear together on JT’s new single, “Suit & Tie,” performed side-by-side at the Grammys earlier this month. Soon after, Rolling Stone announced that they’d be headlining a tour together this summer. Fenway Park might make sense as a local venue. On Wednesday, the Baltimore Business Journal reported that Timberlake and Jay-Z will play M&T Bank Stadium, home of the Ravens, in August. Of course, M&T Bank Stadium’s capacity (about 70,000) is more in line with that of Gillette Stadium (just under 70,000). On March 19, Timberlake — who played a Red Sox scout in his recent film “Trouble With the Curve” — releases his first full album since 2006’s “FutureSex/LoveSounds.” It’s called “The 20/20 Experience.” The singer-actor’s camp announced Thursday that he’d be hosting “Saturday Night Live” on March 9 and will sit in with Jimmy Fallon the week of March 11.
