Director Michael Corrente, whose credits include “Federal Hill” and “Outside Providence,” and “The Fighter” producer Dorothy Aufiero have optioned the film rights for Casey Sherman’s new book, “Animal: The Bloody Rise and Fall of the Mob’s Most Feared Assassin.” The book about the notorious New England hit man Joe “The Animal” Barboza comes in April. “Joe Barboza was the FBI’s version of Frankenstein’s monster,” Corrente said in a statement. “He was the creation of two sworn enemies, J. Edgar Hoover and Bobby Kennedy, who developed a lawless program to eradicate the mob in the 1960s.” Sherman, who previously wrote “A Rose for Mary: The Hunt for the Real Boston Strangler,” works at Regan Communications.
