The Independent Film Festival Boston opened at the Somerville Theatre Wednesday night with a screening of the drama “The Spectacular Now” based on the young adult novel by Tim Tharp. Director James Ponsoldt was in town to talk about his movie, which stars “The Descendants” actress Shailene Woodley and Miles Teller of the recent reboot of “Footloose.” Joining Ponsoldt on stage for a Q&A after the film was screenwriter Michael Weber, who, with writing partner Scott Neustadter, is also adapting the popular John Green novel “The Fault in Our Stars.” (That movie will star Woodley, too.) The night drew a number of local film fans including Cambridge’s own Casey Affleck, who serves as creative advisor of the film festival this year. The IFFB was to continue Thursday night with a screening of the local movie “The Way, Way Back,” which stars Marshfield man Steve Carell, and was filmed at the Water Wizz in East Wareham last summer.
