Scorsese to produce Vinny Paz pic, Derek Sanderson film gets a star
Filmmaker Martin Scorsese is getting back into the fight game. The director of the Jake LaMotta biopic “Raging Bull” is set to produce a movie about Rhode Island boxer Vinny Paz . According to The Providence Journal, Scorsese has agreed to be an executive producer on the project, which is being pushed by East Greenwich native Chad Verdi. Paz, nicknamed “The Pazmanian Devil,” was a boxing champ who suffered a broken neck in a car accident but three months later returned to the ring. Verdi says the working title of the movie, scheduled for release in 2016, is ‘‘Bleed for This: The Vinny Paz Story.’’ . . . In other movie news, Logan Marshall-Green and Wyatt Russell are the first actors signed on to star in “Turk,” the story of Bruins legend Derek “Turk” Sanderson. Marshall-Green, perhaps best known for 2012’s “Prometheus,” will play Sanderson, while Russell, the son of Kurt Russell and Goldie Hawn, will play No. 4 Bobby Orr. (Russell played college hockey at the University of Alabama-Huntsville and played professionally in Europe and Canada.) Said producer Shep Harmon of Tenth Green Productions: “Casting the roles of Derek and Bobby was extremely difficult because they are internationally known and beloved sports stars. We knew we had to get it exactly right and we have.” Edward Burns, who’s producing the movie, has already been cast as Sanderson’s father.
