When he was in town a few weeks ago, director David O. Russell told us that “American Hustle” is his “biggest movie” yet. And by that, we believe he meant the most ambitious in terms of plot and perhaps cast. (Shot earlier this year in Boston, “American Hustle” stars Jennifer Lawrence (inset), Bradley Cooper, Christian Bale, Jeremy Renner, Amy Adams, and Robert De Niro.) Judging from the trailer, which showed up online, he might be right. The film, scheduled to be released with other Oscar hopefuls in December, is about the FBI sting operation known as Abscam, with everyone looking very 1970s. “Everyone is playing someone they’ve never played before,” Russell said Wednesday on “Good Morning America.” “The economy, like it is today, was in a tough place, and people very eager if not desperate to make something happen, and when people are like that, lots of crazy things can happen.” . . . Meanwhile, “The Judge,” which Robert Downey Jr. and Robert Duvall are currently shooting in town, has been given a release date of October 2014, the beginning of awards season.
