Monster99 is clipping the Sox to victory

He’s been the Red Sox cut-off man for a while, the person several Bosox players turn to when they need a trim. He’s the man known as Monster99, the colorful coiffeur recruited a few years ago by Big Papi to trim the team’s tresses. This season, of course, it’s been all about the beards. “I don’t want to take no credit,” the barber told us Friday before boarding a flight to St. Louis. “I do what I do. I just want them to win.” And they just might as long as Monster99 is around. In 2007, the season ended with a World Series win in Colorado, and the New York native, whose real name is Angel Lucas Pena, was there. He doesn’t style all of the players, but he did give Game 3 starter Jake Peavy (left) a fresh cut before he took the mound. And no, he won’t be breaking out the clippers for any of the Cardinals players during the series. “I don’t want to give them my luck,” he says. “I don’t want to make bad publicity with the Cardinals, but I’m sticking with the Sox.” (Monster99 does, however, want to make good publicity for Andis, which makes his wireless clippers.) So does he want the Red Sox to win the series at home? “It’d be nice to win it at Fenway,” says the Bosox barber. “But it’s like the bathroom: When you gotta go, you gotta go.”
