Local ‘sisters’ celebrate ‘American Hustle’ in NYC
The Massachusetts-made movie “American Hustle” had its big premiere in New York on Sunday, which means that local actresses Erica McDermott and Melissa McMeekin got to strut down another red carpet with their A-list costars. The friends — who played sisters in David O. Russell’s “The Fighter” — both have roles in Russell’s latest Oscar-hopeful. While the “Fighter” sisters traveled as a group during the promotion of their 2010 film, McDermott and McMeekin got to brave the limelight on their own for this premiere. “It would have been so scary to do that [first] red carpet by ourselves,” McMeekin said. “This time, it was really fun and exciting to be my own person.” McDermott agreed, adding, “I had my own character and my own scenes and my own stuff to talk about.” Of course, McMeekin and McDermott, who still call each other sisters, did work the party as a twosome. They also got their makeup done together by Boston’s Noel McKinnon, of makeup 2 die 4, and by Jose Rivera, best known for his work with Sephora. In “American Hustle,” McDermott plays a con artist working for a boss played by Shea Whigham, of “Boardwalk Empire.” She also gets some good screen time with Bradley Cooper. McMeekin hasn’t told us too much about her role because she says it would be a spoiler. “I work with Bradley Cooper and Christian [Bale] and Amy [Adams],” she disclosed after Sunday’s premiere. “I pop up a couple of times.” “American Hustle” was filmed around Boston last spring.
