One Lizzie Borden rates another
Lifetime has put up a trailer for its Lizzie Borden movie, “Lizzie Borden Took an Ax,” which premieres Jan. 25 and stars Christina Ricci. We weren’t sure what to make of the teaser — which at first glance reminded us of “Downton Abbey” (if it were a horror film) — so we showed it to mezzo soprano Heather Johnson, who played Fall River’s maybe-murderous Lizzie in Boston Lyric Opera’s recent production of “Lizzie Borden.” After viewing the Lifetime trailer, Johnson said she was intrigued. She did question some of Ricci’s costumes (the plunging necklines, to be specific), and the fact that Borden would be played by a petite actress. (Johnson says that the real Lizzie was a “hearty 32-year-old woman.”) Johnson did say, however, that Ricci can pull off the creepiness that it takes to play the part. Lifetime isn’t the first network to take on the local tale of Borden. Actress Chloe Sevigny had said in 2011 that she was developing a miniseries for HBO about Lizzie, but we haven’t heard anything about the project since then.
