Blocked bike lane leads to viral video confrontation

Snow can make getting around the city difficult this time of year, especially for those brave (or is it foolish?) souls who insist on bicycling through the city’s narrow, icy streets. This, of course, can lead to trouble, as it did during a recent afternoon on Commonwealth Avenue when a cyclist found himself blocked by a cranky oldster whose sedan was straddling the bike lane while idling in traffic. Thankfully, the entertaining argument that ensued was captured by a camera on the cyclist’s helmet and posted on YouTube, where it’s been viewed more than 224,000 times. Not bad for a 30-second squabble. We’re told the video is the talk of the Boston Municipal Court because the white-haired driver, who rolls down his window and uses some choice language to harangue the cyclist, resembles a certain judge. “You’re in the [expletive] snow, so stay there,” he sneers. “What a [expletive] moron you are.” The cyclist, who uses plenty of profanity himself, is not amused. “You’re going on YouTube, my friend,” he says. The video was posted on UniversalHub.com, and a few commenters said they plan to contact the Board of Bar Overseers, which evaluates complaints against lawyers and judges. The Globe could not independently confirm the identity of the judge, and a spokeswoman for the Boston Municipal Court had no comment.
