Locals do good in 2013
There are some locals on DoSomething.org’s newly-published list of the “Top 20 Celebs Gone Good of 2013.” Boston-bred actress-writer Mindy Kaling (right), of “The Mindy Project,” comes in at No. 17, which means she beat out Justin Bieber, NBA player Kevin Durant, and hip-hop artist Kendrick Lamar. “Kaling was a regular at benefits where she raised money for female empowerment organizations like Girls Inc. and food organizations like LA Food Bank,” DoSomething.org said on its website. No. 1 on the charitable list was Taylor Swift (left), whom DoSomething praised for donating $100,000 to the Nashville Symphony. “Swift also headlined an event benefiting Centrepoint, an [organization] working to help young people experiencing homelessness,” DoSomething explained. We’d add that earlier this year, Swift — who owns a beach house in Rhode Island — also donated $10,000 to the Horace Mann School for the Deaf in Allston and invited the school’s students to her summer concert at Gillette Stadium. When we reached out to talk to Swift about her do-gooding before the local gig, her rep told us she didn’t want any attention for her charity work. Classy, right?
