Massachusetts travelers may soon have another close-to-home option for airfare to Europe, as The Providence Journal reports T.F. Green Airport is close to bringing international service to Rhode Island.

The Rhode Island Air Corporation says it’s in “final negotiations’’ to bring two new airlines to the airport, which would offer service to Europe four days a week. It’s not clear which airlines those would be.

While T.F. Green has in the past offered chartered flights across the Atlantic, the Journal reports regular international travel has been a long time coming for the Warwick airport.

Green has been ready for years to accept international flights. The airport has a seldom-used Federal Inspection Station on the lower level of the terminal building. The station has facilities for customs and agricultural inspections. It has the capacity to handle two arriving flights at a time.

The offering could serve as a boost to the airport, which has seen its passenger numbers fall off this year compared to last.
