O'Brien, a former Boston TV anchor and radio talk-show host, yesterday called the appointment "a signal honor and a tremendous challenge," adding that civic journalism "is the future of responsible journalism."

He has submitted his resignation to Channel 68 and will begin his job at the Pew Center on April 20.

Jan Schaffer, executive director of the Pew Center, called the 57-year-old O'Brien "one of the most seasoned civic journalists in the broadcast industry," who possesses "solid journalism values and a depth of knowledge about media partnerships."

O'Brien coordinated TV coverage of "The People's Voice," a civic-journalism project that included the Globe, WBUR-FM, and Channel 68 in an effort to tap citizen input into the New Hampshire presidential primary and the US Senate race between William Weld and John Kerry.
