State Democrats will challenge Romney
By John McElhenny, Associated Press, 06/07/02
BOSTON -- The state Democratic Party is filing a formal legal challenge to Republican gubernatorial candidate Mitt Romney's eligibility for the office based on his residency status, a state Democratic official said. The official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the party would file the complaint with the Ballot Law Commission before a 5 p.m. Friday deadline. The state constitution requires that a governor have lived in the state for seven consecutive years prior to election. Democrats have questioned whether Romney, who lived in Utah the last three years and oversaw the Salt Lake Olympic Games, maintained his official residency in Massachusetts. Romney admitted Thursday that he filed his taxes as a resident of Utah and as a part-time resident in Massachusetts in 1999 and 2000. After announcing his candidacy in April he amended the returns to change his status to resident in Massachusetts both those years. |
