BOSTON -- Will McDonough, a well-known sports columnist who worked for The Boston Globe for more than 40 years, has died. He was 67.

McDonough died late Thursday at his home in Hingham while watching ESPN's "SportsCenter," said Don Skwar, the Globe's sports editor.

Skwar said the cause of death had not yet been determined, although McDonough had heart problems in recent years.

McDonough, who retired from the newspaper two years ago, was best known for his NFL coverage. He wrote about the NFL for more than 30 years and had covered every Super Bowl since the championship game began nearly four decades ago.

After his retirement, McDonough wrote a weekly sports column for the Globe. He also did work for CBS and NBC and had continued to provide TV sports commentary in recent years.

His son, Sean McDonough, is a national sports commentator and play-by-play announcer.
