Top recipients of foundation grants
Elite universities were the top recipients of foundation grants of $10,000 or more given or committed between 1992 and 2001, according to a survey of 1,000 of the nation's largest foundations. In 2001, more than one of every four foundation grant dollars went to colleges, universities, and graduate schools.

* NOTE: The study examined grants of $10,000 or more from about 800 of the 1,000 largest foundations, including almost all of the top 500. In addition to the 800 largest, the study also includes 200 other foundations of varying sizes. The sample accounts for more than half of all foundation giving. About three-quarters of the sample comes from private foundations that dole out grants, while the rest represents corporate, community, and operating foundations.
