Has this country changed?

"This is a different country this morning," the Globe's David Shribman writes, a nation brought to a breathless, terrified standstill. Do you feel vulnerable, afraid? Have we lost our freedom, our sense of security, our breezy confidence? Share your thoughts.

Amy N., Brookline
The fact that I was contemplating walking 3 miles to work rather than take the T is a sure sign that I am a different person than I was yesterday. As I sit here, high in one of the tallest buildings in Boston, it is hard to have the sense of peace that I have had up until now.

AL, Boston
I am so sadden by yesterday events. But as a born again christian I know that the Lord is the true ruler of this world and vengence will be His. We must pray for our nation, from the President on down, to the victim, rescue workers, NY, Washington, and PA and as hard as it is we must even pray for the people responsible for this horrible tragedy. May the Lord Jesus bless us all and keep us strong as we turn to Him for healing, strength and understand. Keep the faith.

Justin, Rutland,VT
It's a very sad day, I know I speak for all Vermonters that our prayers and thoughts are with all the families and people of NYC, DC and Pennsylvania. We as Vermonters and Americans must stand strong together now more than ever. One security step should be to eliminate all carry-on luggage except for medical/health items for passengers that need them!

Anonymous, Boston
If women ruled the country, we wouldn't have experienced this yesterday.

Andrew Kling, Brookline
I think that it is important to remember that this was an action taken on us. It is beyond individual control. It was an attack of one ideological state upon another. The worst thing that could happen is to succumb to this attack and change our way of life. Certainly, like the Challenger and Oklahoma, it will affect us emotionally and pyschologically, but ultimately, we must strive to achieve our optimism again. Otherwise, we may win the war, but lose the battle. I refuse to live a 1984 way of life and will not tolerate the sacrifice of freedom due to an incident that was beyond my control.

Mike, Arlington
The Japanese made the mistake of bringing together the American people against a common enemy and where totally destroyed. Bin Laden has done the same thing and will get the same result. We are the mightiest nation on earth and it's about time we started acting like it.

Jillian, Hingham
I don't fear the worst. I expect the worst, however I don't want to see the next war, and I don't know if US air attacks are the answer. I'd like to see those countries with ties with this terrorist group get completely cut off with the rest of the world- I'm referring to imports, exports, everything including food and water.

Brian Trentsch , Lynn
I am and will be in a state of shock for quite some time. Unlike some of my elders and peers, I have yet to see, grasp and understand destruction and the loss of life in such great magnitude. As I watched the TV footage yesterday everything seemed surreal. I waited for credits to appear on my television screen, ending the nightmare, but they never came. I live in a vincinity of Lynn that planes fly over consistently, day and night. Sometimes even my radio in my bedroom will pick up the Captain of a plane radioing the tower. As I sat on my back porch last night, in the dark, the quiet became deafening. I saw 2 planes flying above, going back and forth, on several occassions and at that point, everything that had been surreal, became complete reality. I think it is important that we, as Americans do not judge, determine or make hasty decisions of who and what is responsible for such senseless acts of violence. May we stay strong, both mentally and physically, for those who have lost life and loved ones. We should not resolve this conflict on our own, in the form of unjust punishment to those who may look like "Arabs." However, let us resolve this chaotic situation as a civilized American Nation, systematically and efficiently, both mentally and physically when all the facts and responsible parties are identified.

Jason, Boston
The organizations (individuals, terrorist cells and countries that harbor them) that committed these attacks have allowed their religious fervor to cloud their sense of history. We now have strategic and moral imperatives to finish what was started yesterday.

Brett, LA
I am horrified at yesterday's events. And my heart goes out to all those who lost loved ones. I just wonder what the future will bring. Will the United States be reduced to a paranoid police state intent on restricting personal liberties in the name of fighting terrorism? I certainly hope not, because that, to me, is the biggest potential tragedy of this whole thing.
