Has this country changed?

"This is a different country this morning," the Globe's David Shribman writes, a nation brought to a breathless, terrified standstill. Do you feel vulnerable, afraid? Have we lost our freedom, our sense of security, our breezy confidence? Share your thoughts.

Jennifer, Jamaica Plain
I am deeply sad and afraid of the days to come- life is precious take a look around, start to apprechiate the small things in life you never know when your time is up. My heart goes out to everyone- we are forever changed

Tom, Dracut
I feel neither vulnerable nor afraid---what I do feel is anger and the resolve to see this through. This attack forces all Americans to face the fact that we need immense increases in defense spending to enable our military and intelligence agencies to develop the capabilites needed to counter this new threat. If we have to forgo a prescription drug benefit, so what? The primary mission of the federal government is national defense, not income redistribution. It is time for the Left to stop demonizing our military and intelligence agencies, to stop placing suffocating restrictions on them that prevent them from doing their job. It is tragic that it has taken this event to awaken us to this reality.

Stephen S, Waltham
While this has been a tragic event, unparallelled in our country since the bombing of Pearl Harbor, we must never loose sight of the fact that this atrocity was carried out by extremists and should in no way influence our views and relationships with Muslims here in our own country and abroad. Religious and political extremists, whether Christian (both Protestants & Catholics), Muslim, Jewish, atheist, theocrats, monarchists, Communists or whatever, have been killing in the name of their God or political system for millenia. An entire people should NEVER be singled out for the acts of a few who cannot come to terms with a civilized, open and tolerant society. Those guilty of terrorism anywhere in the world should be found and punished to the fullest extent of the abilities of the international community, but only the guilty, NEVER the innocent whose only cime might be that they are of the same race, creed or nationality.

Free US Citizen, Attleboro
A great man once said: "The only thing we have to fear is fear itself". If we give into terrorism and to fear, then they have already won. Now we will just keep one eye open when we sleep to take inventory of friend and foe.

Jack, Malden
I can't wait for Rand McNalley comes out with the new map of the world with the country (Afghanistan) responsible for harboring these terrorists absolutely wiped off the map.

Angela McAlister, Westford
I think it will be more difficult to move around the country and between countries. We will need to guard against becoming a police-focused and security-focused country. Our ability to support freedom with acts of personal responsibility is being challenged. I am angry. I am NOT afraid. The world is too big and too full of horrible possibilities to hide from random acts of unconsienceable violence. The world is still full of opportunity and loving people.

Jamie, Braintree
I'm afraid America will not do anything about this. America is going to sit on there butt and maybe put some government sheriff to look into the matter and that will be the end of it. After the first explosion, they should have deployed fighter jets, picked a country, doesnt matter which one, and bombed it.

Fred, Boston
In Britain when the Iranians attacked the government there, the SAS neutralized them. Then they rounded up the animals and shipped them all out of their country. That would never happen here. It should, but it won't. I saw a couple of Arabs laughing it up yesterday, not on the TV, but in front of the Museum of Science in Cambridge. The time of the liberal is over, the time of compassion is over, the special interests of self proclaimed victim groups is over. We must unite as Americans and first support our government, rid the streets of this Arab disease, and retaliate in a force that would stop these animals from ever attacking again. I am ready to reenlist to do anything to help. When these limousine liberals call you as fanatical as the Arabs responsible, start reading of the names of the people you know personally that have died, I am up to six...

Melissa Shedd, Boston/Jamaica Plain
For one I am sorry for all those people who had died yesterday in that crazy explosion. I am afraid. Afraid of what is going to happen next. Things are only going to get worse if we declare war because than who ever did this crazy mess is going to keep this carrying on until they win. I never felt unsafe in my life but I am guessing that time came for everyone in America. God Bless Us.
