Has this country changed?

"This is a different country this morning," the Globe's David Shribman writes, a nation brought to a breathless, terrified standstill. Do you feel vulnerable, afraid? Have we lost our freedom, our sense of security, our breezy confidence? Share your thoughts.

Michael, Concord
Consider the following comments from an article in today's Globe. Then tell me that we have ANY sort of resonable security at ANY airport in the country! "While firearms are not permitted in passenger areas, some airlines do allow them to be stored in the baggage compartment. Delta, for example, allows customers one item of 'shooting equipment' as part of the passenger's free checked baggage. The list of allowable weapons includes rifles, pistols, and up to 11 pounds of ammunition."

P.J., Ashland
Of course we have lost our sense of security. It would be silly to think otherwise, although too often our politicians seem to forget about events as they drift further into the past. There is nothing done in this country to deter this kind of activity, no fear of retribution instilled in the maggots that perpetrate this kind of evil. It disgusts me how open our doors are to everyone. People cry out against racial profiling of individuals who meet descriptions of terrorist groups and sympathizers, and don't think about the repercussions of what happens when you coddle the masses and never say "no" to people, despite how extreme their views or radical their ideas. The fact alone that we allow extremists and sympathizers to establish bases and essentially set up camp in Boston ought to fill us with disgust at our own leaders. These people should be driven by force out of our cities, our states, and our country. As for those Arab and Middle Eastern people who had nothing to do with this attack, while I do not wish them any harm, I have to admit that their feelings and security throughout this ordeal should be at the absolute bottom of everyone's priority list. After all, what do you think would befall the unfortunate Americans who found themselves in Iran, or in Afghanistan, if this happened there in an unprovoked fashion? It is time we started behaving towards these other groups the way in which they behave towards us. Better to let a few innocents be taken for the greater good of purging the evil masses than to allow further freedom to these devils. And when the time comes to mete out justice, all rules should be tossed out, all treaties ignored, just as they were ignored yesterday. The responsible parties should be tortured publicly and strung up in effigy.

We are way behind the times in terms of airport security. Eliminating curbside check-in is a lame effort to solve a larger problem. We should be modeling our airport security after Frankfort, Germany. Bring on the guards with AK-47's!!

Melissa Shedd, Boston/Jamaica Plain
For one I am sorry for all those people who had died yesterday in that crazy explosion. I am afraid. Afraid of what is going to happen next. Things are only going to get worse if we declare war because than who ever did this crazy mess is going to keep this carrying on until they win. I never felt unsafe in my life but I am guessing that time came for everyone in America. God Bless Us.

James, Boston
Today marks a new era in American Histiory, new again can we allow such a brazen and evil attack on the innocent men women and children of America. Did I feel fear and vunurablity yesterday, in a word yes. However if we stop living life the American way, then the terrorist have won, and those people who died died to serve the terrorists plans, this cannot happen. What we must undrstand is that we now must be more aware of ourselves and that we Americans are not belovedby everyone in the world.Changes have to be made to ensure that this cannot happen again, it is navie to think that nothing will or should change. Perhaps we have been obverconfident that no one would dare to strike at us in such a bold fashion. The truth is we have always been vulnerable, but we choose to take that risk as a society. Countries such as Isreal, the United Kingdom and Freance have dealt with threats suchas these for years and perhaps we should re-evaluate what risks are acceptable. Perhaps a stronger secuirty checkpoint system is required throughout the country not just at airports. And maybe armed guards or mairines in the airports would be a reassuring move. Have we lost our freedom and security? No not by a long shot, we will continue to be Free, as long as I live and breath. What we need to do as a nation is to strenghten our resolve as a nation against people and governments who would commit such atrocities. We need to grieve as a nation for what was done, then we need to move on and punish those who did this to us, seeking justice, not vengeance. God Bless America.

Steve, Douglas
Weak response to Lockabee,Cole,Embassies. It took YEARS to punish Tim McViegh. Because we show a lack of backbone to terrorists, we have produced the worst period in our history. WE MUST MAKE A STAND. We need to form a pact with all nations to condem these acts. IF THAT DOSEN'T happen, then we can not excerise retribution with extreme predjudice. Which means we need to act covertly. Each once in a while, we can incinerate targets. Never take credit for it, it just happens, and without a trace of evidence. Take out radar bases with covert ordinace, FUEL AIR attack a suspected terrorsit base, and say nothing after the deed. Do this every time we suspect a base. Never stop doing it, ever.

L, Stoughton
This country as we know it will be forever changed. What a sad day for these "United" States. My heart goes out to all the families and friends of the victims.

Rick, Norwell
I am very angry, as are we all. I just hope that we don't stoop to "their" level when we do retaliate. I also pray that we as a country will stand united as a whole. Finally, I hope we do not turn on those within our own borders who happen to be of foreign dissent.

Shawn, Boston
I'm interested in organizing, or participating in, a citizens rally somewhere in Boston that will condemn this act, and speak out on what our country needs to do. Does anyone know of such an event, or would anyone be interested in assisting me organize one? smdked@yahooo.com If they can show images of right-wing Arabics shooting off guns and celebrating over our dead in the streets, we need to show images of the American people and the American democracy in action.

Bobbie, Cumberland, RI
I am in awe. This is so unbelievable. I feel for all those people lost and all the people who witnessed any of the events and all the rescue and health professionals who have to deal with the aftermath, in New York and in Washington. I do know one thing however, I have seen so many people come together as I have never seen before in my life and I am more than confident that our leaders of this country will get to the bottom or this and punishment will be given as they know this country must do. GOD BLESS ALL THAT THIS HAS TOUCHED!
