Has this country changed?

"This is a different country this morning," the Globe's David Shribman writes, a nation brought to a breathless, terrified standstill. Do you feel vulnerable, afraid? Have we lost our freedom, our sense of security, our breezy confidence? Share your thoughts.

Michele, Plymouth
I have the most sickening feeling from what is going on with our world today. We must not tolerate this and we must let these terrorist know that we will not tolerate these cowardly acts of violence. It's time to stop playing footsy with terrorist groups and make an example, show them that this is our country it's about damn time we take control back. What has happened to America? I wish I knew. God bless all the victims of this disastrous event and the family's of them....and God bless America.

Kelly Babcock, Atlanta GA
Terrorism is a cancer of in the human soul. It must be removed, excised, but not randomly and not with vengeance, but with concern and precision. Terrorism, wherever it is found must be stopped for the human race to grow and thrive. We cannot fear it, we must sorrow that it exists and prevent the cause. Those who engage in terrorism should grow up and face the reality that they do nothing to aid anyone, and only harm every human soul with the foulness that they perpetrate.

Tim, Undisclosed
I still think we have the greatest possible place on the planet to live in. We cannot let this stop us from doing what we do. This would mean we have lost the war on terror, lost the war on stupidity, on racism and on logic. It's true, the Islamic radicals have been handed the short end of the stick when they got Israel for a neighbor. They just don't get along. Israel has more power, more soldiers, more weapons, and more might. Israel is our ally, and we back them in all they do. They back us, or at least they say they would, if it ever came to it. It just hasn't yet. It is time for them to act on our behalf. We should not send American boys halfway around the world to do a job Israeli boys should be doing. Sorry to have to say it, but Israel wouldn't exist if not for the USA and now the time to pay the bill has come. Israel- are you going to let us down? If so, we should withdraw our support for them in every way.

CC, Boston
I definitely feel vulnerable and afraid. So much has changed in the past few hours and it is all just unbelievable. Part of me was afraid to go to sleep last night because I didn't want to wake up to hear that more terrorism had occurred. I am slightly nervous to ride the T and work in Boston because you don't know when or where the next attack could occur. I feel it is difficult to prevent these kinds of attacks. I feel nothing but grief and sorrow for the victims, and friends and family of the victims. My thoughts go out to all of them. Let's hope that we can find whoever did this, and punish them severely at all costs.

Audrey Avila, Taunton
I Believe The Best Action of the Moment Would Be for Every Church to Ring Its Bells One Week from 9-11-01 in Memory of All Lives Lost. This Small Action Will Express All Americans Heartfelt Emotions.

Alex Kuraev, Newton
I think it's time for an action. It's not about revenge, adequate return, etc. It's about deadline for any negotiation with the bandits. We should come to those terrorist's nests, like Palestine and take all the weapons away from them. By force, if needed. Celebrating death of innocent people is a war crime, they should be considered as Nazi criminals of war. Disarmed and isolated. We shouldn't allow them to involve us into blah-blah political negotiations and discussions, but dictate the terms of their being for the future - for the good and safe future of our children and their children as well. Otherwise, their children would become the same criminals as they are now.

Andrew, Hingham
We should be dusting off our old nuclear warheads. In one swift motion we should eliminate certain parts of the middle east. I'd love to see them jumping up and down and celebrating when we unleash mushroom cloud. We need swift and painfully brutal action so that these events will not happen again.

Tom, Brighton
The real heroes in this tragedy are the passengers and crew of the downed flight near Pittsburgh who defended themselves and the country against the knife-weilding terrorists. It was their courage which has allowed the White House to remain standing today. God Bless all those who have died, but an extra prayer goes out to those who physically stood up to these cowards and downed that plane before any mor harm could be done. These people are the true heros, an I feel i would have done the same thing. I wonder why someone on the Boston flights could not do the same. I guess we'll never know the true reasons why these planes hit the twin towers, rather than landing in new York harbor.

Chris Bova, Methuen
First I want to send my prayers to all victims, victims families, and victims friends. I used victims for all three because thats what they were....VICTIMS. They weren't asking for this, nor have they done anything to bring this on themselves. Next I wish the rescue crews god speed and mental strength for the scenes that they have experienced, and the ones that will be challenging them in the days to come. My statement is brief. DO NOT LET THEM WIN.....We must try and continue with our daily routines. If we change our perspective, become afraid and quiver of what could happen next.....THEY'VE WON. Terrorism begins with terror because that is the main objective. They want us to be terrified everyday of what could happen. We all must be strong, and honor the fallen by going forward and try not to satisfy their objective.
