Has this country changed?

"This is a different country this morning," the Globe's David Shribman writes, a nation brought to a breathless, terrified standstill. Do you feel vulnerable, afraid? Have we lost our freedom, our sense of security, our breezy confidence? Share your thoughts.

Haps, Arlington
It is time for the united states of america to walk away from the illegal state of Israel .

Antonio, Fairhaven
Yesterdays horrific tragedy is a calling and wake up call to all Americans. Hopefully through our grief we will gain strength, unity, and wisdom... "United we stand, divided we're nothing" I support our government and stand behind it! Together as a nation, and together with all other democratic free nations we need to destroy this evil and find peace again.

C., Malden
My prayers to the loved ones of the victims. Now is the time for the world to come together and eradicate this evil.

Tim, Cambridge
For me, this runs a lot deeper than simple pride in saying that "we can't let the 'enemy' know we are afraid.'" I know that yesterday, and continuing today, I have felt honest fear and horror for perhaps the first time in my life. What I thought were these two feelings before were fleeting...this isn't going away, and the long-term ramifications of what has happened I cannot fathom. THAT is fear.

Matt, Wellesley
Although a sobering tragedy and dark landmark in American history, just like after Pearl Harbor, this event will be the catalyst that unites us against a common enemy. And as history has proven, when this country stands as one, we are virtually unstoppable.

Paul Condon Jr, Malden
I am scared to be working in Boston since the security efforts have been breached by two airlines, in two different airports in the United States.

Turtle, Boston
I am truly still in shock and, though my superiors are demanding that "life goes on", I am not prepared to concentrate on work when there is clearlky so much more to focus on right now in this country.

Flo, Boston
Yes, we are all vulnerable and afraid and these incidents show just how unprepared the U.S. really is in terms of terrorism. Captains of planes need to carry guns to protect themselves and the innocent passengers. Why hasn't anyone thought of this? They should be treated just like police officers and given similar training. Currently captains are helpless and perfect targets for terrorists because they have no way of protecting themselves!!!!! Terrorism will not stop until simple, logical ideas like this get into place!!

Daniel, D.C.
We have only lost our freedom if we allow ourselves to be scared. Yes, this is scarey; yes, this is a tragic, horrible occurance; we must mourn those lost. But we must also ensure that this does not happen again, meaning we respond in similar fashion -- this was an act of war, not terrorism. To survive as a country, we must move on. As a free country we surrender a little safety for our freedom, but nothing like this should happen. We cannot allow our freedom to be squelched because of this, and we must ensure this cannot happen. It's a tough proposition, certainly.

Robert Wallace, Avon
Yesterday was a tragedy and I hope our Government really pursues the people and/or governments responsible. However, we have surrendered more than enough of our freedoms in recent years. The purpose of terror is to terrorize and the best thing we can do to show these terrorist that we don't bend is to let life go on as before, without restrictions, even though there is some risk.
