The event has put all of our beliefs in our country and our strength on trial. Someone sought to shake is to a breaking point, and the people of the US rallied around her wounded. Never have I seen a more remarkable show of human spirit and valor on the parts of the volunteers, fire fighters, police officers, emts, doctors, nurses, and medical technicians, and of random kind strangers.
We stand on a singular precipice-- Remember we need to show the world that you can solve battles through diplomacy rather than through school yard bully tactics. They have innocent lives in foreign countries, too.
Ronda, Shirley
People all over the world live with terrorism every date. We as American's take our freedom for granted feeling that nothing can or will touch us. Yesterday proved us wrong. We can be touched. To bring this country to a standstill is to tell the terrorist that they have won. We may be down, but we won't be down for long. We will rise up from this tragedy to be stronger than ever.
Pata, Boston
Anyone who thought America was invulnerable to attack was living in a fantasy world. However, I think people are just surprised at the sheer ferocity and evil planning that went into this. This is the stuff movies like "Armageddon" and Tom Clancy novels. The World Trade Center is GONE. It was knocked down by two hijacked planes. I still can't believe it.
Andrew, Nashua, NH
Our freedom. Our security. Our confidence. Because of our freedom we have lots of confidence that may have given us a false sense of security. But no matter how tight security could have been, as long as one plane, one innocent was killed the end result is the same. While the person(s) behind this will be found, I feel our energies are better spent rebuilding, healing, helping, and remembering. My sympothy is out to the victims, my blood to the injured, and my anger to those who will avenge this tragedy.
Craig, Weston
WE HAVE NOT LOST OUR FREEDOM. To acknowledge that we have lost our freedom is to cede victory to those terrorists who are trying to take it away.
We'll make small modifications to our behavior, but these are long overdue anyway. WE MUST BE CAUTIOUS and SMART, BUT NOT BE AFRAID.
If we are afraid, then the terrorists will have won. If we are afraid, we are cowards refusing to defend our way of life and the future of our children.
Terrorism is the enemy. Terrorists come in all colors and nationalities. It is an ongoing guerilla war that every one of us is obligated to fight. If we give up, all of the sacrifices of the many thousands of people who have died protecting this great country will have been for nothing... and our lives will have been meaningless.
Nick, E. Bridgewater
This type of journalism creates hysteria. Under the aegis of reporting the national sentiment, you inflate the hysteria, magnify the problem all under the delusion that you are merely reflecting reality. Please, just for now, merely relate facts, do not sensationalize and do not pander to the lowest common denominator. It is not time for quick headlines that exacerbate the problem. Be true to your calling.
Michelle, Hopkinton
I suddenly feel scared and vulneralbe. As a country, we're not holidng our heads high right now. I think Americans always thought the United States had the best defense systems. The best weapons against terrorism. The best of everything to fight against anyone who would harm us. And that's gone now. I think the United States had a big ego at one time thinking no one could ever harm us on American soil. And it took this tragic, horrific event to realize we're just as vulnerable to the acts of terrorism as any country.
Fred, Boston
Yes, this is a different country this morning. We are facing a reality that we have never encountered, and that we have to deal with quickly, but with a confidence that we have the right targets and the wherewithall to complete the mission successfully. More than that we have to start to better understand how this enemy operates, why it had 10 year olds dancing in the streets of the middle East, and what we have to do in order to meet and destroy threats coming from such forces. I sincerely believe that we will be successful. The US has not failed in previous challenges just as unknown at the beginning as this one. Because of this Mr. Shribman does us all, especially the heroic firefighters and police officers of NYC,and other workers striving to clean up the rable and get at potential survivors, a tremendous disservice when he refers to our nation as having come to a "breathless, terrified standstill". We are not in such a state and will not succumb to such a state, as much as the terrorists behind these horrific attacks would like to believe is the case.
Dave, Topsfield
If someone targets you for whatever obscure reason, there is only so much prevention that can be done. ITs payback time and we ahve not lost our freedom
Jean, Groton
I hope that we work together as one to fight this terrorism. That we will get up, go to work with a new sense of commitment to ourselves, our families and this country. That even in the darkest moments we will shine. We will go on... but we will not forget.
