12/13/02

Statement of the Minister President of the Massachusetts Conference, United Church of Christ:

Cardinal Law's resignation will be the real beginning of the long road to healing that faces so many, inside and outside the Roman Catholic Church.

The pain and tragedy experienced this last year by so many Catholics - and the excruciating, hidden pain experienced by victims for far too long - does not belong to Catholics alone. The entire Christian church - Protestant, Orthodox, and Roman Catholic - has experienced shame and betrayal of persons placed in positions of privilege and power.

It is overdue that the Christian church, in all its settings and forms, devote itself to honesty before God and each other, to tough love, reconciliation, heart-felt confession, and the hard work of healing.

I pray for the victims of clergy abuse - Catholic, Protestant, and Orthodox. I pray for a healing of the great wound across Massachusetts.

Nancy S. Taylor
Minister and President
Massachusetts Conference of the United Church of Christ

The United Church of Christ is the oldest and largest Protestant denomination in Massachusetts, with 430 churches, 97,500 members and 900 ordained clergy members.
