Clinton follows search for missing Kennedy planeBy Associated Press, 07/17/99WASHINGTON (AP) - President Clinton spoke with members of the Kennedy family today after he was told John F. Kennedy Jr.'s plane had disappeared, the White House said. The executive plane carrying Kennedy left a New Jersey airport Friday night, bound for a Kennedy wedding in Hyannisport. But it failed to arrive at Martha's Vineyard, and the Coast Guard and Air Force were searching today off New York's Long Island. Clinton, who is spending the weekend at Camp David in western Maryland, was told about the disappearance of the Kennedy plane by his chief of staff, John Podesta, about 7 a.m., press secretary Joe Lockhart said. Clinton soon called members of the Kennedy family, including Sen. Edward Kennedy, D-Mass.; John Kennedy Jr.'s sister, Caroline; and Housing Secretary Andrew Cuomo, husband of Kerry Kennedy, daughter of the late Sen. Robert F. Kennedy, D-N.Y. Lockhart's office issued this statement: ``President Clinton was informed early this morning of the reported disappearance of the airplane carrying John F. Kennedy Jr. and others, including his wife, Carolyn. He is being kept fully informed of the ongoing search efforts, which are being coordinated by the Department of Transportation, the Coast Guard, the Federal Aviation Administration and the Department of Defense. ``All our prayers and thoughts are with the families of those on board.'' |
