Patriots lineman charged with assault and battery

WALPOLE, Mass. -- New England Patriots offensive lineman Kenyatta Jones was arrested after allegedly assaulting an acquaintance with scalding water, police said.

Jones, who has not played this season due to injury, was arrested Tuesday, a day after the incident, Walpole police Lt. Scott Bushway said.

He was arraigned Wednesday in Wrentham District Court on charges of assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, assault to maim, and mayhem.

Bushway described the male victim as a longtime acquaintance and possibly a house guest of Jones. The victim was hospitalized and later released after suffering burns on his back, shoulder and forehead.

"The motive is unclear," Bushway said. "It seems to be completely unprovoked."

Prosecutors identified the victim as Mark Paul, an administrative assistant to Jones and another Patriots player.

Patriots coach Bill Belichick declined to comment on the arrest.

Joseph Cataldo, a lawyer for Jones, did not immediately return a call seeking comment from The Associated Press.

Jones started 11 games for New England last season, his second in the NFL.
