A heavy sheath of metal surrounds the bottom of each of the 116 cable stays to protect them against stray motorists and terrorist attacks. Each stay contains between 14 and 72 strands of steel. Each of the strands contain seven wires. Put end to end, all the strands together would stretch for 215 miles.
